Thumbsmith

Thumbsmith makes YouTube thumbnails and Shorts covers. Describe the shot, put the words in quotes, add your photo if you want to be in it, and it builds an image made to stand out in a busy feed.

Make a thumbnail

  1. Open Thumbsmith from the sidebar.
  2. Describe the thumbnail. Put the words you want on it in quotes, like "I QUIT".
  3. If you want to be in it, upload your photo (see below).
  4. Pick the model, style, shape and how many (1 to 4). The price shows on the send button.
  5. Press send. When it is done, download it, press Edit further to change one thing, or copy the prompt.

Every thumbnail follows a few rules on its own: one clear subject, strong contrast, your quoted words spelled exactly, and nothing important in the bottom right corner, where YouTube puts the video length.

Settings

  • Shape. 16:9 Wide for YouTube (to start), or 9:16 Tall for Shorts, Reels and TikTok.
  • Style. None (to start), Hype, Reaction, Clean tech, Gaming, Cinematic, Tutorial, Listicle or Versus.
  • Images. 1 to 4 per press. Guests get 1.
  • Sparkle button. Suggests an idea, or rewrites your words into a stronger prompt.

Put yourself in it

Upload up to 5 photos (JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF, up to 8 MB each) and choose what each one is for: Preserve, Same person, Whole look, Style or Layout. These work the same as reference images in Pixelsmith.

  • To keep your real face, use Preserve or Same person with GPT Image 2.5 Flare, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, GPT Image 2, Nano Banana Pro or Seedream 5 Pro.
  • Ideogram V4 cannot read photos. Add a photo while it is picked and Thumbsmith switches to GPT Image 2.5 Flare.
  • Want a set of your own faces ready to use? Make a Face Pack, save the shot you want, and upload it here.

Borrow a style

Like how another channel's thumbnails look? Borrow the style.

  1. Press Borrow a style and paste a YouTube link. Normal videos and Shorts both work.
  2. Thumbsmith reads that thumbnail and picks the Video look style for you.
  3. Write your own prompt and press send.
  • Only the style is borrowed. Faces, logos and words from that video are not copied.
  • Borrowing costs no credits. You can read 30 new styles a day on Free and 100 on Pro.
  • When you are signed in, every style you borrow is saved. Open Pick from your looks to use one again. Your 24 most recent looks are kept there. Remove one with its ×.
  • A private or deleted video cannot be read. Try another link.

Credits and limits

  • Each image costs the model price, plus 1 credit for each photo after the first. A borrowed style counts as a photo.
  • Edit further costs the same as one image on that model. Ideogram V4 cannot edit.
  • You only pay for images that arrive. Unfinished images are not charged.
  • Downloads are JPEG to start. You can also pick PNG, WebP or AVIF.
  • Saved thumbnails are kept for 30 days.
